Abolitionist Movement
The Abolitionist movement was an effort to stop slavery in the world. In 1891, abolitionists rallied to the unions cause. They were happy president Abraham Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation. This meant that slaves were free in many parts of the south. Dred Scott, a slave who had lived in the free state of Illinois and the free territory of Wisconsin before moving back to the slave state. They had stated that Scott was black, he was not a citizen an therefore had no right to sue. Abolitionists were incensed. The courts decision would bring slavery to the attention of the nation an was a step toward slavery's ultimate destruction.

Election of Lincoln
One of the main reasons for the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln became president. Lincoln didn't want to stop slavery completely he wanted to stop it from spreading. He was the final straw for many southerners. They believed Lincoln was Anti-slavery and was in favor of the north. Before Lincoln was in office, seven sates succeed because of fear their way of life would be destroyed.
